Although difficult to date, beads of this kind were commonly traded for goods &#8211; and even people &#8211; in Africa and North America, and are commonly described as trade or slave beads. Early production centred on Venice, but by the early 17th century glass bead factories had been established in London, for instance <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.oregondigital.org\/beads\/article\/view\/6205\">Sir Nicholas Crisp&#8217;s factory in Hammersmith<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For comparison see
