Malting tile

, , ,

A fragment of a malting tile, 19th century? These thick floor tiles were used in malthouses with the perforations allowing heat from furnaces below to pass through and dry the grain evenly. The perforations on this object appear to have been made by hand.

Found with my elder daughter, then aged four.
