Lead alloy finger ring with blue glass stone

, , , ,

A lead alloy finger ringer set with a blue glass stone, with beaded decoration and two lobes on the shoulder. Identified by FLO as a post medieval child’s toy ring; several such examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (e.g. LON-B3B7B3) and dated to the 17th or 18th century. However I also note similarity to late medieval lead alloy or pewter finger rings – including those with lobes – as described by Geoff Egan and Frances Pritchard, Dress Accessories: 1150-1450, pp. 329-335.

For reasons unknown, the band of the ring had been deliberately twisted before being deposited in the river.

Found on a warm summer’s evening with my oldest friend, Chris.
