Sherd of bottle containing Sparrow’s Leather Sauce

A sherd of stoneware bottle containing leather sauce – a cleaning agent and polish invented by ironmonger Isaac Earlysman Sparrow (1793-1830) in 1826.

On 23 June 1823 Sparrow made a balloon ascent with the aeronaut Charles Green in Oxford. Sparrow subsequently issued tokens depicting a hot air balloon and renamed his Bishopsgate premises Balloon House (source).
