Trade token with sugar loaf device

, , ,

A copper trade token with a sugar loaf device, 1648-1672.

Obverse: AT THE SVGGAR LOFE / A E K

Reverse: IN THEAMES STREET

This was my first 17th-century copper trade token. The initials indicate the names of the trader (A K) and their spouse (E), while the design usually represents their trade. In this case the sugar loaf probably refers to a tavern. Several Sugar Loafs stood on or near Thames Street (now Upper and Lower Thames Street) in the 17th century, when this token was produced. Indeed, there is one nearby on Cannon Street today, thought it dates to the 19th century. Naturally I brought my token on a pilgrimage there.

Recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (record pending).
